Panels and shells are widely used in vehicles, including aircrafts, ships, automobiles, trains and so on. The vibration and noise properties of those panels are one of the major concerns in the design and operation of the vehicles. Damping treatment is one of the usual vibration and noise control techniques. The enhancement of damping effect is one of the key problems in research and engineering, especially, the broadband reduction in middle to low frequency ranges. In the past decades, the study of artificial periodic structures (including phononic crystals, acoustic metamaterials, et al) receives much attenuation. This type of structures has multi unique physical properties and some of these properties show potential application in the field of vibration and noise control. However, in most of the former studies about artificial periodic panel structures, the damping effect is not considered sufficiently and specially, while the wave propagation properties are concerned more. In this paper, the concept of metamaterials is induced into damping design, and the vibration and sound radiation reduction of panels from this new type of metamaterial damping are studied. Via the comparison of metamaterial damping and traditional free layer damping and constrained layer damping, the enhancement from the metamaterial design are studied. During the comparison, the added mass from various damping treatment are consistent. The results indicate that the vibration reduction is improved greatly via metamaterial design, and the sound radiation reduction is increased also.
